Anax's Brief Bits
Critiques seem to be all the rage these days, long walls of text are the favorite form, I spend too much time on here, I like being a critic, I find abridging fascinating, I need to expose myself to more and different abridged series, and I ought to cut down on my long-windedness.

Ergo, Brief Bits.

If you want my dumb opinion on your stuff, post it below and I'll respond with a 50-word-or-less review of it. The idea is to condense an opinion into only the most important attributes of a video, rather than rambling far off into the distance on minor points. This should mean speedy turnaround time for submissions.

(we'll see how this goes; I'll amend my rules as needed)

I can promise only honesty.

You are what you put your time into.

RE: Anax's Brief Bits
I wanna post here because I've been so judgmental of your shit that I want to prove that what's good for the goose is good for the gander. Unfortunately I don't have anything recent due to computer issues, so here's something from over a year ago:

I don't feel too guilty because it's only 50 words.

"Every man's heart one day beats its final beat, his lungs breath their final breath. And if what that man did in his life, makes the blood pulse through the body of others, and makes them believe deeper in something larger than life, then his essence, his spirit, will be immortalized by the storytellers, by the loyalty, by the memory, of those who honor him and make whatever the man did live forever."

That "Ta-Da!" sound effect brings back memories.... X-D Your jokes seem long instead of forced. The pacing is the funniest aspect, complemented with appropriate video manipulation. Your comedy oscillates between laugh-out-loud to what-are-you-getting-at to so-random-I-have-to-laugh. I was personally pleased with the ending legal jargon. Good ep! 8/10

RE: Anax's Brief Bits
I really like your review style. So why not?

Not really a typical abridged video though.

You're not specifying why my script needs "pruning". Pointing it out w/o clarifications isn't helping me.

I am very confused about this one. You're basically telling me to "Direct them harder to not try hard". What do you mean by "forced" or "try hard"? They did not sound as if they were acting?

Sorry if I'm criticizing your "critique", but I haven't received a single thing to use in order to improve my content. Not sure if you were just trying to stick to the word count, but if so, maybe restraining yourself from writing what's on your mind, which you could easily summarize, might not be the best tactic.

RE: Anax's Brief Bits
Well therein lies the problem with "50 words or less." X-D

I can address the second point currently. The dialogue feels forced out of your VAs; it doesn't naturally flow, to me. They sounded too much like they were acting, which left me with the impression they were unconvincing performances. (this is a better problem to have than totally uninspired voice-actors) Everyone overreacts in nearly every single line. Everyone expresses rapid, frequent changes in pitch, the hallmark of "passionate but overdone." (I do it too and try to curb it) Everyone's range is the same, whole, wide spectrum of pitch.

To draw a parallel from music, you don't want to compose a line that switches dynamics from soft to loud constantly and quickly. Transitioning between the two depends on the emotion you're trying to bring out in that part. "William Tell Overture" starts off slow and soft, then grows to be fast and loud; an extreme, binary example. "Semiramide" starts loud, grows soft, and ends loud again. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 is the best example I can recollect that employs some of that rapid transitioning, but only for short periods of time before returning to gradualness.

Reference:
Spoiler(Show)

The audience shouldn't be jostled every half-second with a change in pitch, but eased into changes. Otherwise, every emotion in individual characters blends indecipherable from each other.

The breathiness of their performances bugged me as well. Replay the episode but don't watch it, just listen to the audio. Perhaps that will demonstrate my point.

You are what you put your time into.

RE: Anax's Brief Bits
Not asking for a review, just saying comparing abridging pacing to kickass classical music is one of the best review analogies I've seen. Symphony No.8 out of Unfinished.
