The Principles of a Good Abridged Show

RE: The Principles of a Good Abridged Show
This past episode has made me realize a weakness in my writing, punchlines and one-liners. Dialogue, comical situations, structuring an episode... I can do that. But does anyone got any tips for delivering a better punch? And making good stand-alone short jokes without resorting to just being random?

Edit: By past episode, I mean the one you guys haven't seen yet because I'm too lazy to finish editing it.

"Every man's heart one day beats its final beat, his lungs breath their final breath. And if what that man did in his life, makes the blood pulse through the body of others, and makes them believe deeper in something larger than life, then his essence, his spirit, will be immortalized by the storytellers, by the loyalty, by the memory, of those who honor him and make whatever the man did live forever."

It was then Inna decided he wouldn't let them get him down. He ignored the urge to throw his hands into the air and give up. He instead sat on a chair with broken glass and urine on the seat and grinned though the seering pain.

And Remix smiled and stepped on Inna's cat. Inna was shocked and unable to act upon the horror of seeing his feline companion flattened under 178 lbs. of Puertorican.

RE: The Principles of a Good Abridged Show
So, if I want to test out a style of humor, for example satire, it would be beneficial to study people and shows that use said style of style humor? Like how to execute it and such?

I cant think of a single situation where it wouldn't be beneficial to study up on something before you did it. It will help you in ways you can't really imagine.. Or, sometimes, even notice.

I need to update this thread. I will do that soon.

RE: The Principles of a Good Abridged Show
Is emulating the general style of another abridger on the same level as stealing a joke? I found that watching episodes of Sailor Moon Abridged and Pokemon 'Bridged allowed me to draw inspiration and think of ways to continue my first couple of scripts. Of course, I haven't actually released my first episode yet, so the jury's still out on whether or not that did me any good.

RE: The Principles of a Good Abridged Show
There's always things that cause inspiration in comedians, parodists especially. Anyone can tell you 1Kids is a huge fan of LittleKuriboh, and has got a lot of comedic and writing influences from his earlier work. Granted, completely copying an abridger's jokes and pacing is stupid as hell, but you can draw conclusions and learn from the stylings of an abridger, as you develop your own style of parody in our community.

RE: The Principles of a Good Abridged Show
I love this guide. I wish we had abridging seminars so this could be handed out on pamphlets.

Maybe I'll just settle for linking it in youtube comments on shows I think need improving.
